Paper 4 - Speaking

Part 1 is intended to break the ice, test your ability to interact with the examiner and use general social language.
You will be asked questions about yourself, your family, your home, leisure activities, likes and dislikes, your education. Questions may be about your past experiences and your future plans.

It is important to listen carefully and give clear, direct answers. Where possible include a few extra details or reason for your answer.
Take the opportunity to show how fluently you can speak.
Don´t prepare answers beforehand but make sure you know the vocabulary necessary to talk about the topics.

Let´s have a look at these candidates.
What is your opinion? How well have they done?

Now watch Part 1 in the following video.
How would you mark them?
Do you think they´ve done a good job?
Leave your comments.

  1. I wolud put a 4 on Rafael, he could give all his ideas in a clear way, giving opinions and he gave reasons why he was giving that answer. I would put a 3 on Maude, he could give her opinion but in a shorter way than Rafael, so the examonator had to push her in order to obtain a good answer. I think both of them have done a good job.

    1. Good job, Mauro! I think the marks you´ve GIVEN both Rafael and Maude are quite fair.
Careful with spelling, I think they could be typing errors, that´s why it is so important to read before you press Enter. Thanks for sharing

I would say that both of the candidates did well, but I consider that Raphael deserves an upper mark, so 4 It would be fine, just because he explained himself in a more expressive way than Maude and by the fact that he came up with more ideas and related them. In the other hand, I think Maude diserves a 3 because she tended to be nervous so that made her forget some words to connect ideas and because she said short answears

Well done, Dylan!! You've got a good point there, Raphael seems more confident. ON THE OTHER HAND Maude gives short simple answers. Thanks for sharing.

I would give them both a 3. They did it well but it wasn't that good. Both of them were a little shy.

Maybe this is due to exam jitters, what do you thik?

      2. To make small quick jumpy movements: The pictures on the wall jitter whenever a truck drives by.
      n.
      1. A jittering movement; a tic.
      2. jitters A fit of nervousness.

  4. I think they did well. Like the boys said, Raphael was more confident and somehow more fluent. He expressed his ideas well and had a very nice pronunciation. While Maude seemed a bit nervous and kept repeating the same words again, but she did ok.
Clearly Raphel deserves a higher mark, maybe a four; and a 3 or 3.5 for Maude.
(It was only part one, right?)

    Yes, Otis. Just part 1.
Good you noticed the narrow range of vocabulary used by Maude.
    That is an important element.
    Well done!
